What Is Podiatry, And How To Become A Podiatrist?

Podiatry is a branch of medicine that you might have heard of before. It is devoted to the study, diagnosis, and medical and surgical treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle, and lower extremities. The term podiatry first originated in the early 20th century in the United States and is now used worldwide, including in countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada.

In this article, we will discuss what podiatry is, and especially, how to become a podiatrist, in case you’re interested in becoming one. A podiatrist is a professional who diagnoses and treats conditions affecting the foot, ankle, and structures of the leg. They work in hospitals, private practices, nursing homes, etc.

Podiatry is practiced in many countries, while in many English-speaking countries, the older title of chiropodist may be used by some clinicians (not to be confused with chiropractors, which is unrelated). In Australia, for example, graduates of recognized academic programs can register through the Podiatry Board of Australia as a "podiatrist", and those with additional recognized training may also receive an endorsement to prescribe or administer restricted medications and/or seek specialist registration as a "podiatric surgeon". In multiple non-English-speaking countries of Europe, the title used may be prologue (French) or podólogo (Spanish and Italian). The level and scope of the practice of podiatry vary among countries.

The tasks and duties of a podiatrist in NY include (but are not limited to):

The main question that you may be asking, however, is how can you become a podiatrist. Well, to become a podiatrist, it is necessary to complete a degree such as a Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine or Bachelor of Podiatry. The curriculum is made of theoretical and practical lessons, as well as clinical experience. The US podiatric medical school curriculum (alike with their US MD and DO counterparts) is composed of lower extremity anatomy, general human anatomy, physiology, general medicine, physical assessment, biochemistry, neurobiology, pathophysiology, genetics and embryology, microbiology, histology, pharmacology, women's health, physical rehabilitation, sports medicine, research, ethics and jurisprudence, biomechanics, general principles of orthopedic surgery, and foot and ankle surgery. In many podiatric medical schools, such as Western University of Health Sciences the entire didactic, or classroom, a portion of the curriculum is taken alongside DO or MD students. However, the main step to becoming a podiatrist are mainly:

  1. Complete an accredited podiatry degree. Requirements for these courses usually require that you have completed high school, studied a number of science subjects, and achieved an appropriate ATAR. However, you can complete an approved undergraduate degree and a Master of Podiatric Practice.
  2. Register with the podiatry board in any state you wish to work in.
  3. Many Podiatrists choose to specialize based on their experience and interests. Common areas of specialization include sports medicine, biomechanics, arthritis, and gerontology.
